Faithful and Still Weak

Scripture:
“Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus.”
2 Timothy 4:20

Devotional:
Trophimus was a faithful servant of Christ, yet he was sick.

That one detail carries great comfort. Paul had seen God do extraordinary miracles. He had witnessed healings. He had preached the gospel with apostolic power. Yet here Paul says, “I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus.”

Trophimus was not sick because he was useless. He was not sick because Paul had failed. He was not sick because God had abandoned him. He was a faithful believer living under the wise providence of God.

This verse corrects a dangerous misunderstanding. Some people assume that if Christians are sick or suffering, they must have weak faith or hidden failure. But Scripture does not teach that. Faithful believers can be weak. Faithful believers can suffer. Faithful believers can be limited by bodies that ache, break down, and need rest.

Sickness is not outside God’s providence, and healing is not under human control. God can heal, and we should pray for healing. But God heals according to His wisdom, not according to our demands.

This means your weakness does not place you outside God’s love. Your limitations do not make you useless to the kingdom. Sometimes faithfulness looks like going. Sometimes it looks like staying. Sometimes it looks like being left at Miletus and trusting that the Lord is there too.

A field is not useless because it is not being harvested today. There are seasons of planting, waiting, drought, repair, and rest. So it is with the Christian life. Your season of weakness is not wasted in the hands of a sovereign and gracious God.

Where do you need to trust God’s providence in weakness, limitation, or suffering?

Prayer:
Father, help me trust You when my circumstances are painful and confusing. Keep me from believing that weakness means failure. Teach me to pray for healing, care for the suffering, and rest in Your wise providence. Amen.
